I teach at a low-income/high poverty district with all students who receive free breakfast and lunch. This will be my first year teaching fifth grade and I am looking forward to the change. I want to continue to building a community within this group of students.
We all come from different backgrounds, ethnicity and abilities, so I want this class to use those differences and strengths to build a safe and strong community.
Too often, I see students struggling to work as a team because of their differences or abilities. My goal is to build a community where they are comrades, leaving no one behind, where only acceptance and support of each other are seen and heard.
This may be an audacious goal, but someone has to have it. I truly want our students to be the future we want to see. Let us help them!
My Project
I would like to build a positive, safe and comfortable classroom, a place where they feel like they are at home. These materials will build a culture where reading is encouraged and welcomed. They can snuggle with a book and a pillow and get lost in their book. They can relax with friends, building community. They can "camp" out and read in the dark and make reading fun.
This will be a place where they can come to finish their book, to relax with a friend, if they need a moment of pause, a time for anything that will make them feel safe.
