My Project

These books will help fill our vending machine with great books about different cultures and hair. When we first filled our vending machine, these were the first books to go. The students get to pick a book if the are great examples of BARK. B = Be Prepared! A = Act Responsibly! R = Respect Self & Others! K = Keep Learning! It is part of our PBIS program.

Since diverse books can serve both as mirrors and windows of different human emotions and experiences, they offer a powerful opportunity to build community, increase students' empathy, and push back against bias and prejudice.

Reading books that represent different abilities, cultures, beliefs, and skin colors helps us change our attitude toward those differences. Offering a diverse title for a community read allows the reader to both steps into the shoes of the protagonist and have a buffer from their reality.
