Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"California Missions" is an integral component of our fourth grade social studies curriculum, and must be supplemented with real life, hands-on learning experiences in order to be fully appreciated. Children are usually assigned a specific mission to study, explore, and create. However, teachers working with underprivileged students must find creative ways to fund field trips and art projects normally associated with this critical piece of the California unit. We are an inner-city school in south central Los Angeles, and our goal is to take the entire fourth grade class(155 students) on a train trip to the most beautiful and well-known mission in San Juan Capistrano. They will not only benefit from experiencing the mission, but will also be exposed to the awesome California landscape throughout the journey, a rare treat for city kids. As the teacher of the fourth grade, high achieving/gifted class, I realize how their lack of exposure has the potential to limit the amazing ability and raw talent that so many of my students posess! We are willing to donate our free time, as weekend travel is cheaper. We look forward to hearing from others who wish to help "our kids" achieve their full potential.
