My students are dreamers, problem solvers, and likely the most creative little people you will ever meet.
They are a happy group of first graders who love school and love to learn.
My students' economic situations are just as varied as are their family dynamics. We embrace and welcome the diversity in our school. We have military families with a local National Guard unit in our area and an Air Force base close by. We aim to take good care of our military families. Our district includes an Indian Reservation and we have a high population of Hispanic students, many of whom have family members who work in the agricultural industry. It is so rewarding to teach, whether I am helping a gifted student learn, one coping with ADHD learn, or anything in between. I feel like I have the best job ever!
My Project
I would like to create a Game Day atmosphere to practice reading and math skills in the classroom. Imagine the children wearing headbands and pinnies as they play a math toss game that focuses on adding three digit numbers or to play a sentence scramble game where they put scrambled sentences back together to make sense. The stop watches can be used to time each other. The digital recorder will be used to record their reading, so they can listen to themselves. The table cloths add to the Game Day atmosphere while the medals and squeeze balls can be used for prizes. This is a day that can be recreated many times while just changing the skills based on what the children are working on.
It's all about the kids!
I want to help my students see themselves as readers and mathematicians through the use of diverse games and books. I want to accelerate student learning though my lessons and give my first graders more opportunities to be in the driver's seat; to be the heavy lifter in their learning. They are the primary thinkers and actors. Providing engaging and diverse learning opportunities is key to making this happen.
