Our Futures Are So Bright, We've Got to Wear Shades!
My students need 13 books and study aids to prepare them for the SAT/ACT, like Barron's ACT guide and "Vocabulary SAT Word of the Day," as well as for post-secondary plans in college or the military.
Being the first to accomplish something is an honor. For most of my students, however, it can also be a lonely and frightening task. My ELL students who choose to apply to college or the military are usually the first in their families to do so.
My students hail from 11 countries and speak a collective 13 languages.
The majority come from poor or working class backgrounds and struggle to succeed in our homogeneous, affluent district. They need extra attention and support as they navigate the post-secondary process, a gauntlet that is a challenge for any student!
Because of differences in language and culture, lack of experience and demands placed on their time, most of my students' families cannot or do not assist much in the application and decision processes. In ELL, we work with the students to help them become familiar with the options before them and to help their families understand the effects these options will have on the student and his or her family. It's an overwhelming process for everyone involved but I am proud to say we have several successful ELL alumni who can vouch for its value!
My Project
I am requesting several books that explain different steps of these processes such as, From Here to Freshman Year and Countdown to College. These books help students along the pathway to college from starting out as freshmen to thinking about majors and choosing schools or branches as juniors and seniors. I'm also requesting preparation materials for essay writing, SAT/ACT practice and vocabulary development (including some outside the box approaches like hip-hop and word puzzles). Your support will provide us with the resources to support students going through the college or military application process in the classroom, during after school workshops and on their own time. In a clear and tangible way, your gifts will be there to prepare them for each stem and strengthen their resolve.
From their first thought as freshmen that a college or military career is possible to the hours spend pouring over SAT vocabulary and college essays to the joy of the seniors' first acceptance letters, the impact of your donation will be felt by every member of the ELL program as they work toward their full potential and the possibilities that lay before them.
