This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school, lovingly called “Baby West”, was founded in 2016 with a group of 100 KIPPsters in the heart of West Philly (an under-served and impoverished area of the city). KIPP Philly is on a mission to prove that zip codes do not define a child's destiny. We strive to provide all students with the keys to empowered, choice-filled lives through learning! Every day we exemplify what it means to be a KIPP team and family; we “work hard and be nice.”
The first grade Hawks (named after the Saint Joseph's University mascot) are special because they show grit and love each day as the founding students of our school.
We can reach any goal with the strong partnership of our students, dedicated families, and passionate teachers. In our classroom, we are starting the climb up the mountain all the way to college in 2029!My hope is that we can teach, support, and cultivate young students that are prepared to leave the world better than they found it.
My Project
Our most advanced first-grade readers are no longer learning to read, but instead reading to learn! They are ready to have their hands on more challenging, high quality texts with complex story lines and characters who change over time. It is also critical that students see themselves connected to the stories and characters they read about to build a lifelong relationship with literature.
Our above-grade-level readers need their first chapter books to engage in more meaningful reading experiences and literary discussions!
With these early chapter books, we will be able to create daily book clubs where KIPPsters can build independent reading skills and participate in formative conversations. We believe these books will enable us to meet all students where they are and build upon a blossoming love of reading!
