Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When I first found out that I was teaching first grade, I was excited about reading. Reading was what I planned to do with my students, and I wanted to teach them not only how to read but enjoy the beauty of reading.
Our school population is largely low income, with many students on the free lunch program. Last week a girl in my class pulled my arm to tell me that she could not do her math homework because they couldn't afford crayons. Many of my students are struggling to learn English and need access to resources that are beyond my reach.
What shouldn't be beyond my reach is affording my students a chance to work with quality literature that they can touch, feel and read. Yet as a new first grade teacher, all that I have in my library right now is a few old, bent hand me downs. My students are not excited about reading them because they are so unattractive.
The reading library I am requesting for my students would entirely change my classroom for years to come. Instead of sifting through hand me downs, my students would have beautiful books that fit their reading levels. Since almost all of my students are at different levels, they could chose the level that was most appropriate for them and feel successful as readers. Furthermore, reading would actually become the centerpiece of our classroom, which is exactly how it should be.
Please help us acquire the most critical survival skill, and form of enjoyment: reading. It is a gift that will continue to give back to my students for the rest of their lives.
