I am lucky enough to have a school where the grades loop in K-7. I am currently teaching fifth grade, but I had my students last year as fourth graders, so I know them really well! They all have an avid curiosity which is driven by their exposure to new thoughts and ideas. When children are exposed to something different, they automatically see the possibilities and potential of gaining their new knowledge.
I have traveled a good bit during my lifetime, most recently my family went to Ukraine in June.
During my trips, I think of my students and try to bring them back a bit of the places I visit so they can "see" through my eyes the beauty and uniqueness of each place I have seen. In my classroom, I have two students who have direct connections to other cultures through their parents. They are both bilingual (in two separate languages), and we have had each of their parents come in and share some of their traditions and celebrations with us. It is so valuable for our children to be exposed to a variety of cultures as we strive for commonality through the globalization of our world.
My Project
My students have a great interest in places located around the world. We have experienced free culture boxes from Carolina Navigators through University of NC, Chapel Hill, and the children LOVE seeing items from different countries and hearing about varying cultures and customs.
With these atlases I hope to make them "world travelers" without ever leaving our classroom.
The atlases will help them to really connect with artifacts they see and also help encourage their own sense of wonder and excitement about all of the world's many unique possibilities. I feel our world's future will be determined through global relations.
