My students need books that they can read and understand. This selection of books is primarily bilingual. I have selected all of these books so that my students can always have something they can read.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is amazing, I'm sure all teachers say this, but I truly believe we have been blessed with a lot of amazing kiddos and staff this year. We are a low income district and building that serves grades PK-8, with approximately 75 Spanish speaking students, 20 being newcomers from Puerto Rico and other areas.
Specifically, we have a large influx of students who are new from Puerto Rico, they are learning to speak English, read, write, and understand what is happening all around them.
As their TESOL, or English teacher, I find that we do not have enough resources for them to use in their class that meets their level of understanding. I would like to have a resource that I can use to work with their concepts in the general education class.
My Project
Each week in our school, we have about 3 new students enrolling directly from Puerto Rico. They are coming in with little to no knowledge of English. This causes a large need for resources in both Spanish and English.
I am creating a bilingual library so that no matter what my students reading ability is in English, they have something that they can be reading, because without constant practice in any language, the students will never become lifelong readers. This library will be a supplement to our library and the teacher's classroom libraries.
The students will be responsible for signing them out just like a traditional library, not only will they need to practice their reading, they will learn responsibility.
