I have a classroom of 18 young kindergarten learners. I would like to encourage independence and vocabulary skills in my classroom. On a typical day my students don't just like to read. They LOVE to read books. They especially like to listen to books being read to them.
The students whom I teach live in a high poverty area.
This does not hinder them from strengthening their minds and imaginations. They are reading more and writing more and building their stamina for these skills everyday. My students have smiles on their faces as they enter my class. Throughout the day they strive to work together and work in co-operative groups to complete assignments.
My school is truly a family school. When something needs to be done the school comes together and gets things done. Our school has a food bank, after school activities and parents who are willing to give what they can on a daily basis.
My Project
My students will use these materials in our classroom library. I have seats in the library but they are not very comfortable. I would like the beanbag chairs so that the children will be able to read a book with a partner in the chair.
The leveled readers will come in handy when students are selecting their "just right" books to read during "read-to-self" time. I would also be able to send these books home so that the children can read with their parents at home. I need to increase their confidence for reading on their own so this project would be just what we need.
The students will learn how to select books that they are able to read independently. They will be able to use the pictures in the books as clues to what the words say. They will be able to point and read the words. Since the books are leveled they can use them without a teacher's assistance.
I can't begin to express how much this project can improve my class.
The students will enjoy books more. The donation will expand my library for years to come. I will be able to walk over to my library and quickly pick the books that are appropriate for each student. The students will be able to choose books with confidence. Their lives will be better because it will have them reading on or above grade level when they enter the first grade in the Fall.
