Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 31 students are very bright and love to learn. I want to make my classroom the most enriching learning environment I can. By providing my students with the materials to conduct hands-on learning, we are providing them with endless possibilities.
My favorite part about my students is their diversity.
They come from a very diverse range of home structures: single parent, multiple-family, foster, migrant, and military to name a few. They also come from many different cultures. We are a Title I school with the majority of our students receiving free/reduced-price breakfast and lunch.
It is important for me to meet the needs of all of my students in a safe and engaging environment.
My Project
This STEM project is going to give our Lego and coding skills a huge boost! The LEGO BOOST creative toolbox kits will allow for my students to build and customize 5 different robots! The iPad will be used in conjunction with the kits. The LEGO BOOST app has a fun drag-and-drop interface using easy-to-use coding blocks to trigger movement, sounds and more! The app includes over 60 activities that they can use with the kits! The lap tables will allow for my students to work comfortably on the floor while building and coding with these amazing STEM materials.
According to LEGO, there are 9 amazing benefits of computer coding for kids.
The most obvious is that it creates stronger STEM skills. Coding improves language, planning, organizational and problem solving skills. Coding encourages creativity. Writing computer programs requires kids to think differently in order to fix a bug or get an idea up and running. Coding builds confidence and deeper friendships through success and collaboration. Learning to code at a young age may give them a head start on their futures. Most importantly, students are learning and having fun!
