My students need supplies to care for our classroom snake. We want to make his habitat more comfortable by giving him a proper water dish and hide.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are all bilingual and most are of a Latino background. They live predominantly in a high-crime, low-income neighborhood and nearly 90% qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. Most of my students are immigrants or the children of immigrants.
My students have many hardships, yet they take on challenges with hope and perseverance.
They have many responsibilities
in addition to their education. These responsibilities often include taking care of themselves and their younger siblings while their parents work two or three jobs to make ends meet.
Many of my students have overcome an enormous challenge by merely making it to school everyday. That they can accomplish everything asked of them and still be full of joy and optimism is inspiring. They dream big, and I am lucky to know them.
My Project
My students take great pride in assisting in the care of our corn snake, Jason. They help feed him, they change his water, and they even assist in cleaning out his cage. However, his home is currently outfitted with a shoe box as his hide and a broken plastic pencil box as a water dish.
Our class pet is an integral part of our classroom community and we want his cage to be a point of pride in our room.
However, right now his cage does not seem much like a home. Some of my students have even offered to help pay for a new hide, heat lamp, or water dish for Jason. As impressed as I am with their concern for our pet, I could never let them use their own money to take care of Jason.
In a school that serves a high needs community, it is hard to find room in the budget for things that aren't absolutely necessary for the function of our school and redecorating our snake's terrarium is not a high priority. It is my goal to help my students give Jason the home he deserves and I really appreciate your donations to meet this goal.
