While being a first-year teacher would generally make it difficult to describe the school and students (since I'm completely new), I was lucky enough to complete my student teaching at my current job site.
As a former student teacher and substitute, I've worked in many schools around the district and have yet to find a class with students who are so unabashedly passionate about learning, and my goal is to set their learning on fire!
Though my school is moderately sized, as part of Silicon Valley, we have a great deal of diversity. Our students speak many languages, including Spanish, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Portuguese, and Mandarin, and they come from vastly different financial backgrounds.
While my students are very different in some ways, they are united in their passion for learning - particularly reading. While student teaching, I was stunned by how many students were voracious readers - even those for whom reading was (and still is) a bit of a struggle. Because of our students' love of learning, many of the teachers at my school give up time every day after school to help put together after school activities for our very deserving students.
My Project
These materials will help my students by giving them a variety of options to use in their classroom jobs. For example, my librarians need to have a book scanner and my custodians need to have a vacuum.
This will help enhance the reality of my classroom economic system.
In addition, other classroom supplies will help me prepare my students for versatility. A laminator will give me the option to use centers, which will further help differentiate work for my students. I know that having this extra support will really help my students learn and make their learning environment a very special one!
