My classroom is a busy place full of students engaged in learning in many different ways. We sing and dance everyday for both fun and to help us learn. My students need a 10 player rhythm set, instruments from around the world set and a multicultural rhythm stick fun CD to use with a rhythm stick activity kit.
I teach in a school that opened last year with a kindergarten and a k/1 combination class.
Our vision is to engage our students in project based learning and give the children many real world experiences. The district has added a second grade for next year and each year we will add 2 more classrooms until we have 10 classes K-5. Approximately 40% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our district offers instrumental music instruction beginning in 4th grade, but our youngest learners don't have the opportunity for exposure to instruments.
My Project
Music is an integral part of primary education. Singing to learn, quiet music to concentrate by, and singing for simple joy, enrich children's lives as well as their thinking. I use a lot of singing and movement in my classroom. I am hoping to expand musical instruction through the use of musical instruments. Along with creative expression, music instruction provides opportunities for processing and analyzing sensory information. Math and science are learned through rhythm and pitch. Music is an important part of most cultures. Instruments will provide for a deeper exploration of my students' cultures. The instruments I hope to get are for basic rhythm and examples of instruments used around the world. Children will have the opportunity to play and experiment with these instruments as well as learn how to use them in a structured way in rehearsal and performance.

Music has the ability to make people feel a myriad of emotions. My classroom will be a better place as children learn how to identify different ways to make music, how to work together to make harmonious sounds and how to really listen to one another.
