I began this school year teaching at Brock Elementary School in Slidell, Louisiana. Because of Hurricane Katrina, about five feet of water completely destroyed my classroom. Everything in my classroom - including every book that I have purchased or been given - was ruined by the floodwaters. My losses were not insured. Thankfully, my job was spared, and I was transferred to another school in the district. I now teach sixteen Transitional First Grade students, all of who were affected to varying degrees by Hurricane Katrina. These children have been through so much, yet have shown so much resiliency.
I lost hundreds of dollars worth of literature in the Hurricane - everything from classic children's books to themed holiday books and more. Any teacher will tell you the importance of having an abundance of literature available to the students.
Our parish has a Guaranteed Curriculum which we must follow carefully. The T-1 Curriculum is literature based - with different books that go along with the letters of the alphabet each week. I no longer have many of the books that go with our curriculum. I would love to have these books to use in our classroom. I have chosen all of the books in our curriculum, as well as some books about our state - Louisiana, and some Character Education books. I feel these would be a wonderful benefit to all our children.
