I teach students with mild to moderate disabilities including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Dyslexia, Sensory Processing Disorder and Developmental Delays. My students spend the majority of their day in their general education classrooms and are pulled for small group and/or one on one instruction in my special education classroom for social skills and academics. They also can come to my classroom when they are feeling overwhelmed to take a break, reset then go back to their classroom. My students are very bright and eager to learn but their sensitivities to their environment can get in the way of their learning. They need items to help satisfy their sensory needs and they also need a calm-down space or when they become overwhelmed.
My Project
The first step to building a cozy corner in your classroom is acquiring materials to make it cozy! I would like to have mats on the floor to have a soft space if a child want to lay down with a book, snuggle with a stuffed animal or pillow. Sometimes my students will become overwhelmed/overstimulated by the school environment. The noises, bright lights, and even the different smells can trigger uneasy feelings. I want a space in my classroom where they can take a break, reset and be ready to learn.
Our cozy corner will be used to help students as a calming space and motivate social interactions.
I envision the using the dream chairs for social groups where we can meet to talk about problem solving strategies, share stories, and have group meetings.
