Mr. Pearsall from New York NY is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Our Classroom Library Made Me Cry

My students need 20+ high-interest books, such as Rick Riordon's Lost Hero and Red Pyramid, to enjoy during independent reading.

Hooray! This project is fully funded

My Students

My students are voracious readers, but unfortunately our school does not have a library and my students get most of their reading material from my classroom shelves. Many of them do not get an opportunity to read at home and need your donations to fill our classroom library.

I teach middle school English at a gifted and talented school in a high-need community in New York.

Most of us take easy access to books for granted. My students mostly come from homes where English is not the primary language and where books are scarce. Even if the students have books, it is difficult for them to find the time or place at home to read.

My Project

These books will be used during independent reading when students read books of their own choosing. Studies show that the best way to teach reading AND writing is by supplying high-interest books to young readers. Give them books they want to read and they are off and running to new worlds and expanded horizons. Establishing good reading habits is essential for success in high school, college, and beyond. By your helping to fill our classroom library with interesting books, you will be giving the gift of reading to some very deserving students.

Above all, I believe in the power of words, and the importance of having high-interest books available for all students, but especially for those who come from homes where books and reading are not a priority, or even a possibility.

Reading stimulates the imagination and promotes more reading, which in turn gives students a model for their own writing. If a teacher can find a book of interest for a reluctant reader, half of his or her battle is won.
