My students are all future leaders! So much so that I often have to remind them that I am the teacher and that they may lead each other but not me: not yet! They love giving me ideas on how to "run" things and I love giving them the floor to do so. There is so much a child can't control in this world so to give them a bit of control I believe not only relaxes them, but helps to develop fixers, leaders and problem solvers.
When I get worried about the future of our world today, I only need to enter this classroom to know that everything will be ok .
For example, when a student falls off his chair, I always have at least 3 students rushing over to "rub" that student's back and to tell them that he/she will be okay. When a student is struggling all week, I will always hear a sweet voice telling that other student, "It's ok, you will get there and are still doing a great job." When they see that I am getting frustrated with them, at least 1 or 2 sweeties will come over to me with multiple suggestions.
My Project
First graders love routine. They love what I call, "The Common Area" in the middle of our half circle of desks but they need a more defined place to sit. They would love to have their own letter, animal or shape to sit on. Specifically, they need a large comfy rug.
My students excel in verbal and problem solving skills.
It is in the common area that we talk about everything from life problems to academics. We discuss things such as, "How can I best handle a friend who is invading my personal space?" to "How can I best tackle this math problem?" However, as smart as they are, they are still first graders who tend to be very wiggly and talkative. A defined place for them to sit will help organize our discussions and make them more effective.
By donating our student carpet, you are helping to create an environment more conducive to learning.
