Help me give my students check registers, business cards for the products they can buy, dry erase markers, erasers and snacks. These will be part of their classroom economic system.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is a large Title I school where eighty percent of the students live below the poverty line. My students are academically and economically diverse. Many of them face situations that no child should ever face, like being temporarily homeless. Yet, they are also hardworking, enthusiastic young people full of potential and possibilities. They have lots of life and energy.
They love to learn, especially in new and exciting ways, and they recognize that they are part of a larger, generous community.

My Project
My classroom has their own economic system. Each student has a job. For example, I have a secretary, a banker, a store keeper, a cleaner, a bathroom monitor, etc. Each student gets paid according to his or her job twice a month. They can then use the money they have earned to purchase items and activities from our store keeper.
My project is for items to keep our classroom economic system running.
I am seeking check registers that my students can use to keep track of the money they earn and what they are spending. I am also asking for business cards so that my artist can make more coupons for students to buy. These are for activities they can buy like Lego or Circuit time. Finally, My students love to eat and use dry erase boards. Therefore, I am asking for dry erase markers, erasers and snacks that they can buy with the money they earn.
This is the second year I have used this system in my classroom. I have found that it is the best way for my students to learn about financial literacy. At the same time, it helps to teach responsibility.
