The student-centered BRIDGES program (Building Responsibility, Intelligence, and Decision-making skills by Giving Emotional Support), supports and embraces the diverse needs of students by providing a differentiated method of instruction and by supporting the emotional and social needs of students in this special education program.
The mission of the BRIDGES program is to meet the unique educational, social and emotional needs of our students with emotional disabilities and mental illnesses in a safe and nurturing environment.
More than half of the students in this program are from homes and families that are living in rural poverty. Our goal is to teach these students social skills and life skills that they do not get to experience outside of the educational setting, while providing them with a high-quality differentiated academic experience.
My Project
My students make magnets and buttons to learn about financial literacy while running a real-world business. Many of the students have impaired fine motor skills, which makes cutting fine details very difficult and frustrating.
The Cricut Machine and its accessories have helped them learn how better productivity helps increase profit and employee morale.
The business teaches them many of the skills taught in a traditional economics class (budgeting, sales, profit margins, employability skills) but in a real-life scenario instead of directly from a textbook. Now, we are in need of new accessories and more vinyl for the business.
