This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title 1 school in the Bronx, NY. My diverse students are primarily from Mexican, Dominican, and Bangladeshi descent. Most of the parents moved to America to give their children wonderful opportunities. However, this is difficult without interesting learning resources.

My students deserve the opportunity to come into a classroom full of exciting literature!

My students love to read and enjoy art projects! They also crave hands-on learning field trips. They are motivated by rewards! I'd love nothing more than to make their seven hours a day with me as enriching as possible.

My Project

Our school doesn't have many class sets and each student deserves their own book to read. We voted on the next book selection and my class chose The Watsons Go to Birmingham!

This hilarious and powerful story is told by a 10-year-old, making it relatable for my students.

The boy is on a road trip with his dynamic family. His delinquent older brother annoys the parents for the last time, causing them to get the whole family in the car and take a road trip to experience the iron hand of their grandma in Birmingham!

Students will study character development during English Language Arts time. They will also learn about social issues that existed during the 1960s which ties to our Social Studies unit.
