Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My preschool special education class has been deeply affected by the Coronavirus pandemic by not allowing me to teach my children in the classroom and have full access to the items they need to meet their IEP goals. The children in my classroom mainly have autism, as well as speech and language delays and intellectual delays. It's very important for me to be able to provide my class with all of the hands-on manipulative, sensory, and visual items they need at this time.
The resources that are currently available to my students are minimal.
Many do not have access to the internet, do not have the proper sensory materials to meet their needs at home, and also are unable to get anything due to jobs being cut and they are from low-income families who are doing their best to just survive right now.
My Project
I want every child and family in my classroom to feel welcome and safe. I'd like to give them these books so that they know they matter and are loved from the first time in my classroom. These books will also help with their IEP goals in attention, eye-hand coordination, and turning of pages. They will also help with family involvement and social skills. These stories will help to teach diversity and acceptance of all children and families while opening up discussions about other cultures and traditions. The stories will be used during small/large groups, outside time, and be extended at home so that families can work with their child at home as well.
The labels/folders/containers will help the children to practice with their name identification and have their own personal place to put their items in the classroom.
The colorful paper will be great to print materials for children to cut and trace. Children will be able to identify where their items go and look for their personal labels around the classroom.
