Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Thirty one children in my class will be entering Neverland on November 7th during our reading time. "Peter Pan" is a classic tale that they have never read, so we will be reading it together, flying, and battling Captain Hook and his pirates. On December 8th, 2005 The Theater at Madison Square Garden has offered us an opportunity to attend this timeless musical masterpiece. My students have never been to a musical. This experience will stay with them forever.
I teach this curious class literacy and social studies at MS 206b in the Bronx near Bronx Community College. Our school is a small middle school with predominately low income minority children. We do not have a music or art program. The programs were cut to create more literacy and math classes because we were a school under regents review or a SURR school. In two years we are off that list even though most of our children come from homes that don't speak English. They have worked very hard.
Our class would love the opportunity to see the musical "Peter Pan" on December 8th, 2005. This will bring to life the book we will be reading.
These students are hard working, respectful, curious children that are often trapped in their homes because their parents fear letting them outside due to the violent crime in the neighborhood. Most of the parents are working two jobs just to pay simple living expenses. My students will never have the opportunity to go to such a spectacular show as "Peter Pan" without some generous help. We often hold fundraisers but the total price for this experience is beyond the ability of a middle school bake sale.
