Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If you have played an instrument before, you know the cost associated with doing so. Six years ago, we were fortunate to win a grant and we received 30 band instruments to begin our band program at our school. Please help my students continue to play their instruments.
Our student population is around 500 students, with 200 students in the middle school.
We have a high level of poverty with close to 90% of our students receiving reduced price or free lunch. Our students are fun-loving and enjoy learning and working in and around our community. In the past 7 years that I have been here, the music department has grown in many ways, with the development of school-wide talent shows, community service opportunities, performance opportunities, and the creation of the school band. This year, students in band will be participating in All City ensembles, regional ensembles, community service opportunities, parades, and playing for a local college's hockey team as their pep band. Most of this growth would not have occurred without the special people in our lives who have donated a great deal to us.
My Project
Six years ago, our school received a grant that funded 30 brand new woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments to start a band program. It was a huge success! Over the course of the year, I have come to find that our students do not have extra reeds in their cases. When I began the program, one of the expectations was the students were to supply their own. Since then, I have found that most of the students can't get a ride to the music store with their parents due to lack of transportation and some because they can't afford the supplies. A box of 25 reeds costs almost $30. In my first year with the band program, I was having students bring in money to help purchase reeds. I would charge $2 per reed and keep a stock of reeds out of my own pocket. Then I found DonorsChoose.org. This website has changed our classroom in so many ways and it is due to people like you! Our students have not had to buy reeds in 5 years because of the generosity of people on DonorsChoose.org
It was heart wrenching to ask the students to pay $2 each time they took a reed, in order for me to buy more reeds.
Most come back to school with spare change they are able to find. We were funded for the same project three times already and it was such a help! Your donations this year would help in more ways than can be recognized. I would never wish for one of my wonderful students to have to stop playing due to cost of playing.
