Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm an art teacher at a high-need public school. All day my students focus hard on academics. Art class is a time when they can let creativity flow and thinking outside the box is encouraged and applauded.
I teach a unit on urban street art to my fifth grade students. Most of my students have spent their whole life in New York City and they have great feelings of pride about it. We work together to make observations about subway mosaics that we see around. Some of their favorites are the animal mosaics at the 81st Street Natural History Museum station. Students sketch out their mosaic idea and then paste colored paper squares on the paper to make their mosaic. This is a unit that the fifth graders really enjoy and they come up with amazing ideas. I am trying to teach them to take pride in their artwork and I know that if they were creating a real mosaic like the ones they see around their city it would help them feel incredible pride for their artwork.
If my students had real tiles to create their mosaics they would feel like real subway mosaic artists. It would give them a sense of pride in their artwork and help build their sense of pride for their city. My students have been creating beautiful mosaics out of paper and I sincerely believe they deserve to be able to turn their creations into a 3-D masterpiece that their families could cherish for a lifetime.
You will make it possible for my students to build a piece of art that resembles the masterpieces they are studying. This will be an experience that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
