I teach English Language Arts to students who need intensive interventions to make progress in the curriculum. We also have many behavioral and emotional needs, which can often hinder the learning process. As we work through behaviors with students, we can build a more trusting and calmer environment.
However, because we are a unique classroom, in a small district, our budgetary needs are often overlooked.
We are working in the general curriculum, but we are not a "gen ed" room. We are a special education room, but we cannot use heavily adapted curriculum and tools to correctly prepare our students as they take the general education end of year tests. Therefore, we find ourselves often making do with the supplies and curriculum that has been removed from other rooms. We currently are down three Chromebooks, so we cannot all work on computers at the same time. We only have enough working headphones for about 5 students, and one of the critical programs we use to target individual skills requires technology to access.
Despite the challenges, we were able to "graduate" 4 students last year to general education settings due to strong student growth! Every bit helps in our room!
My Project
All the general education teams have nice Chromebooks that are stored in dedicated charging carts. Our room often gets overlooked so we are currently missing three Chromebooks due to damage. Our Chromebooks get damaged because they cannot be stored properly.
Currently, we use a desk paper organizer to store the Chromebooks, but they slip off, don't get charged, and fall to the floor.
We have tried over and over to arrange them in a way that is safe, but it doesn't work. The cords get pulled, so the Chromebooks do not get fully charged. Further, the metal desk organizer is not large enough to hold all the Chromebooks, so some do not get stored at all. It is also slippery, so even when being careful, students can easily drop the Chromebooks.
When our Chromebooks are damaged, we have to remit them to our tech department and we rarely see them again. Please help us keep what technology we still have safe and secure.
