I teach first grade at Paul Revere Elementary School in Chicago. We have been working tirelessly over the past few years to improve our reading instruction at Revere.
As a first grade teacher I am passionate about teaching reading! My children do not get a lot of extra help with reading at home, so most of their learning happens here at school. Every day I take groups of five children at a time for small group guided reading instruction. This has been very effective for teaching reading to children who are on very different reading levels.
While I have a reading group at my table, the rest of the students are working on learning centers. My children LOVE learning centers. Centers are activities that reinforce and teach skills in a certain subject area (games, puzzles, flashcards etc.). Students work together in learning centers so they build both reading and social skills.
I have created/made hundreds of reading centers over the years. My children use them so often that the centers have been "loved" too much and they are starting to fall apart. I would love to have new and exciting and "well built" centers for my children. They get so excited when there is a new center for them to use. It would help with reading instruction and cooperative learning in my first grade classroom.
