My students need these books to get our lunch time book club started up again! Providing this new book will allow students who want to participate to join in without worrying about the cost.
I am the Media Specialist/Librarian for an elementary school of 850+ students. Our school serves children K4 through 5th grade in a suburban area. We have a very diverse and somewhat transient population. We also have extremely dedicated and loving teachers and parents who work tirelessly to support our sweet students.
We welcome every student who walks through our door to our fantastic school community and celebrate our diverse student population.
Our students come to us enthusiastic, ready to learn and to do their best, regardless of their circumstances. I want our children to have every opportunity to read for pleasure and develop a lifelong love of reading.
My Project
Our first book club selection is "Save Me a Seat" by Sarah Weeks and Gita Varadarajan. This new book is a South Carolina Children's Book Award nominee for this school year and deals with important issues such as immigration, bullying, friendship, and fitting in.
Providing the book for every member of the book club allows for discussions, community building, and the inclusion of interested students, regardless of their ability to purchase a new book.
Many students enjoy coming to the library during lunch and being a member of a club, when they may not have found their place to fit in at school yet. The library is a safe place to share or even begin to develop a shared appreciation for books and reading. We hope to give kids a place to belong and feel included and reading some really inspiring and heartwarming books along the way!
