I am a teacher at a center in Ohio. We are a grant funded center/home based 5 star program that services families from pregnant moms up to kids age 5. We are located in an impoverished area and service numerous homeless families. It is very hard for us to obtain the supplies we would like or need for our classroom.
A large number of our students come from homes that are bad off and may not have an enriched environment to help them grow not just educationally but culturally as well.
Our students will come into our program and some of them may be seeing books and art supplies for the first time. We want to make sure that our students have the exposure to objects that they can't afford at home or their parents have never thought they needed.
Fortunately, I feel that because of the home life most of our students are coming from, they are more willing to learn new things. However, I also feel like because of the same reason most of our kids have a long road ahead of them before they are at that place where learning will come naturally.
My Project
We are needing a new shelf to place into our block area so that we can retire our older shelf that is falling apart. The shelf we currently have is falling apart and can no longer house our beloved blocks.
I would love to be able to give my students a shelf that is inviting and gains their attention.
I feel that an inviting shelf will encourage my students to be more hands on and play with building materials.
We have a small classroom and a shelf makes it easier to organize our toys and make them easier to find. We would greatly appreciate a new home for our blocks to show them they are loved.
