My students need small group reading sets of the Berenstain Bear books to help with fluency, comprehension, and conversations about positive behaviors.
I have a group of 18 second graders that live in New Mexico. Our classroom is bright with many smiling faces. Every student in our classroom receives free and reduced breakfast. No matter students' life situations, students find a safe, nurturing, and loving environment in our classroom. It is also a place where I try to provide my students with many opportunities to learn creatively, courageously, and collaboratively.
My second graders love looking through my shelves organized by our favorite second grade book series.
While often leaving my library a mess after their search, it is so fun to share in their excitement for reading and for the adventures they take. My second graders love getting there hands on a new series and the current favorite is the Berenstain Bears.
My Project
My students need small group reading sets of the Berenstain Bear books to help with fluency, comprehension, and conversations about positive behaviors. In my small group reading, it was difficult to find books with a strong plot, high vocabulary, helpful illustrations, and skill based books while keeping my readers interested. In my desperation, I decided to grab the Berenstain Bears- an old series I used to love. My students had never paid much attention to these books. But once I started using them in my small group, my readers began diving into this series.
The Berenstain Bears have been a great book series for my low readers to engage in conversations about life lessons while also giving them practice with higher level sight words, interesting illustrations, and guided reading skills.
I love how each book has a highly engaging plot while also teaching important lessons. I simply don't want the adventures and lessons to stop. This project would be providing us the ENTIRE series of Berenstein Bears.
I also am hoping to have guided reading group sets which is why each book request has a quantity of four books. Guided reading is a research-driven instructional practice that has drastically shifted my students' reading achievement. It changes their engagement, it gives them achievable goals, and it helps them practice skills and strategies to be a comprehensible reader. This series would be supply my guided reading groups with several months of great, authentic literature.
