Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Learning to play in tune can be very difficult without the right equipment. Just because a student pushes down the correct fingering on their instrument doesn't mean they are playing the correct note. A tuner is vital to successful mastery of this very important skill.
Most of my students come from economically disadvantaged homes.
Many eat free or reduced school lunch meals on a daily basis. I know that music education is making them better human beings and well rounded citizens of our country, as well as improving their test scores on state mandated tests. My students love band very much. So much, that the band hall is their second home. Not just their second home, but also their second family. They are always looking out for each other in any way possible.
They know that it is an honor to be a musician in our band program and they take it very seriously. Even though we may not have the best equipment for learning music, they always try their best.
My Project
I am requesting Korg tuners to use with my band students. These tuners will allow my students to view on a digital screen if they are sharp, flat or playing perfectly in tune. Using this new found information, they will be able to adjust their instruments accordingly by pulling out or pushing in their tuning slides. Once my students understand this principle, I will teach them to listen to other students and hear the sound waves created when instruments are playing out of tune. This will allow my students to fix tuning errors on their own. My students will be able to hear the problem and solve it using these new tuners. This ability will help advance our band to a more mature level of instrumental performance.
