My students need this large loom for multicultural weaving projects! We can also set it up at our 'Art Nights' for cooperative group weaving activities!
Do you remember the excitement of weaving a potholder or other small weaving project as a child? Kids LOVE creating weaving projects and they learn a lot about pattern and repetition when creating these textile projects. They also learn about the different cultures known for their weaving skills.
My school is located in Virginia and we are lucky to have a very diverse student population.
Students bring many rich cultural experiences with them. Our school is located near suburban neighborhoods and shopping centers in a suburban area that is forty-five minutes from a major metropolitan city. We currently have 697 students from various cultures and socioeconomic groups. 223 of the students are eligible for free lunch and 71 are eligible for reduced lunch. 48.1% of students are white, 18.2% are Hispanic, and 14.3% are Black/African American. Our school has a philosophy of doing your personal best and provides a wide range of services and strategies that are used to help students meet their potential. Each grade level has art curriculum objectives that could be explored with the use of the large loom. They each need to create some type of weaving or fiber art textile project. I know they would be so excited to use this loom.
The Harrisville "Friendly Loom" is a large standing wooden loom that allows up to eight students to weave simultaneously. The loom helps develop cooperation, concentration, fine mother control, and spatial relations. The loom adjusts to four different heights to enable students to weave standing, kneeling, or sitting. It is a very sturdy loom that will last for years of classroom use. Large scale cooperative textile projects can be completed on this loom. I would set it up in the classroom and students could work on it in small groups in conjunction with smaller individual weaving activities. We could also set it up at our annual "Art Night" and students and their families could work on it for awhile with other families adding to the weaving as the night goes on. I envision that the result will be a beautiful weaving created by many hands in our school community. We could hang the weaving in the school for all to admire!
I think this loom would have an impact on our school and students because they could participate in large scale cooperative weaving projects.
It would also assist in our studies about multicultural art and would help the students learn about the various countries and the types of textiles they weave.
