We are a school of very diverse people. Our students represent 36 different nations. Many of our students are refugees from Bosnia and northern Africa while others are from Central American nations and the Middle East. As their art teacher, I'd like to teach a unit that celebrates each student's heritage while focusing on our connection as multicultural Americans. To celebrate our connection, we will create a school quilt called, "Our Ancestral Quilt". For the quilt, each student in the seventh and eighth grade will create a quilt square. There are approximately 160 students in the two grade levels so the completed quilt will be about 12'x14'. Surrounding the individual squares will be a red, white, and blue border of stars representing the United States of America. To create the individual interior quilt squares, each student will research the visual arts of his or her heritage. He or she will then draw a design demonstrating a specific technique and/or visual representation of that heritage. For example, a student of Irish heritage could use Celtic symbolism or a child of Mexican heritage could create Mayan symbols of animals. Once their drawing is complete, students will draw and then paint their idea on a piece of canvas. It is a great exposure for the students to break away from painting on paper since canvas and gesso are materials that practicing artists use to create their paintings. The finished paintings will be attached together along with the star-pattern border to create the quilt. The finished quilt will be hung on the halls of the school. This will act as a beautiful reminder of our individual qualities and connections as Americans.
