I teach first grade in an at-risk, Title 1 school in Guilford County, North Carolina. My classroom is full of 16 of the most beautiful, eager, enthusiastic, and thoughtful students I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Their little brains are like sponges, soaking up anything and everything I challenge them with. Budget cuts at the local and state levels prevent me from ordering things that would benefit my classroom and my students. As a young and single teacher, I am going broke! It breaks my heart to deny them opportunities I know would allow them to grow and explore simply because of lack of funding. My students are at a significant disadvantage because of their lack of vocabulary skills. In first grade, we can address this discrepancy early so that they do not fall farther behind their peers. Without direct vocabulary instruction, we are setting them up for failure on standardized tests. I need materials to introduce them to new vocabulary words, revisit the words with games and activities, and teach them strategies to use when they come across unknown words. Gone are the days of copying definitions from a dictionary--elementary students need engaging reinforcement to make new words part of their written and spoken vocabularies. We want to read silly stories, play BINGO, and play Jeopardy to grow our vocabularies! Thank you for your support of my students. Your generosity will help ensure my students are not left behind!
