Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The 6th graders at my school are pretty unique here in Austin, TX. Most 6th grade programs are set in the middle school environment, while our 6th grade is at an elementary school. There are just a few elementary schools left in Austin that offer a 6th-grade program. Many students choose to stay to give them one more year to prepare for the transition to middle school.
Our school values the diverse community we cater to, and the vast range of abilities and personalities that walk through our halls each day.
My Project
Last year I took my students on a similar STEM-based trip with this tour company where I truly experienced the importance of learning from the world around you. I watched my students faces light up with excitement as they were engaged in science, technology, engineering, and math-focused activities. They were immersed into a new city and new surroundings that was much different than their own.
I believe trips like these are truly impactful in the lives of our students.
As a 6th grade program we are working very hard to fundraise so that ALL students can attend the trip, regardless of socioeconomic background. I believe all students deserve an equitable chance to learn. This particular learning experience is one they will remember forever.
We will be attending the Museum of Science, a New England Aquarium Squid Anatomy Workshop, a StageOne Robotics and Coding Helicopter Workshop, a Fenway Park stadium tour, Boda Borg real-world gaming environment, a lab tour at MIT, the Franklin Park Zoo, whale watching, and a Race for Space tour at the JFK Library. Doesn't that sound awesome? Please help my students get to do all of these amazing things!
