This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a Headstart through 5th-grade elementary school but you would never guess this. The students at this school do not let Title I status define who they are as a learner. Many have struggled financially, emotionally, and physically and about 90% of the students are on free or reduced lunch, but that known statistic doesn't stop them from being eager to learn each and every day. Their families have instilled a sense of responsibility and respect and it truly shows in their character.
My 4th-grade students have curious minds and want to explore their essayist style, even though some are still getting over the recent hurricanes, and some were displaced by Hurricane Maria.
Watching them emerge from the basics to the necessary tools to write inspires me! Shaping their imagination is the initial step to build foundation of interest. However, with little resources in the classroom, it becomes difficult to get them to visually implement the skills without writing tools. Exposing them to a variety of techniques and hands on materials would be an added bonus!
My Project
Our fourth-grade writing and language arts classroom is in dire need of supplies to support writing. Our writing center is very limited and most of the students lack basic foundation skills along with writing tools.
My students need writing tools which would include two sets of colored pencils, two packs of writing pencils, two sets of writing journals.
We also need two sets of Word Books on Parts of Speech and Punctuation to add to our small inventory, so our 4th-grade writing students can not only improve their literary skills, but also open the doors of their imagination.
Your support for "Scripting Our Way To Becoming Essayist" project, will also vastly enhance the learning environment for our English Language Learners, as well as the gifted and SPED students.
