The school library serves a small school (300 students) of diverse students. The children come from a variety of backgrounds experientially, ethnically, and socioeconomically. Last year, 38.7% of the student body qualified for free and reduced-price lunch. The school is small, but there is a strong feeling of community and working together for the success of all the children. Our library is a happening place during morning and lunch recesses. Our library is a safe place where all are welcome.
My Project
As Hollywood has the Oscars; Oxford Elementary has the OTTERS. The O.T.T.E.R. (Our Time To Enjoy Reading) Award is a reading incentive program where students will read a minimum of 2-5 transitional chapter books and vote on their favorite.
Transitional Chapter books are an important step in growing readers.
To be eligible to vote, students must read a minimum of 2 books, or their grade (K-2 reads two books, grade 3 reads 3 books, etc.) then vote for the book they enjoyed reading the most and what they think other students would enjoy.
This project has been partially funded by the Berkeley Public School Funds, but I would like to purchase more copies so students can read while the spirit is eager.
One book, Skateboard Party, is unfortunately not gaining much interest so I would like to have a special recess activity where I read a chapter and students can have finger skateboards to play with.
