My Students

The students in my AP Literature and Composition class are wonderful students that need a new, fresh way to prepare for the AP Lit exam. I'd love to have some copies of Othello for them.

My AP Lit class follows many themes throughout the year and Othello would be a great way to study the "other" in literature.

Othello features a Moor far from home, dealing with the politics of white Europe and an interracial relationship. He encounters jealousy and racism and undermining villains. All of these topics and themes can easily be related to our world today, and so will allow them to analyze the complexity of our world then and now.

My Project

Hamlet is tired. He is a whiny school boy, and, while they can relate to him, he has been over studied.

Othello will add some variety to their knowledge of Shakespeare and Renaissance drama.

They will be able to look at racism across time and in a genre where it is often ignored. They can look at politics across time. They can look at jealousy and dig into a truly vial villain. They will be able to see an interracial couple and analyze the complexity of human emotions.

All of the complex themes of Othello will add variety to our class discussions. They will be able to analyze themes across genre, culture, and time.
