OT Supplies for Miss Lydia's Learners

My Project

I currently provide occupational therapy (OT) services to about 50 students across two elementary schools and one middle school in Tacoma, WA. OT is a specialized service provided to students in special education with delays in their fine motor skills and/or differences in sensory processing abilities.

Access to fun, engaging fine motor activities and meaningful sensory accommodations helps my students to fully participate in their school activities.

Fine motor skills are essential to so many school activities, such as writing, using scissors, managing school tools, opening/closing containers, tying/zipping/buttoning clothing fasteners, engaging in art activities and more. I am requesting a variety of toys and tools to support my student’s fine motor development. Feed-the-Animal, Big Feelings Pineapple, Alphabet magnet tracing, and Letter matching Nuts and Bolts fine motor toys help students develop functional grasp patterns, hand strength, and dexterity, which can transfer to improved writing and cutting skills. Additionally, laminating pouches allow me to quickly adapt tracing or writing worksheet to reuse with dry erase markers.

Sensory processing is the way a person’s body receives, organizes, and interprets information from our seven sensory systems (sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste, vestibular, and proprioception). We use information from each of our sensory systems to produce appropriate responses to our environment- a huge part of being a student. Students with differences in sensory processing may be more or less sensitive to sensory information and may require tools/accommodations to be successful in the classroom. I am requesting noise canceling headphones for students who are sensitive to sound, as well as weighted materials (lap pads and stuffed animals) for students who find the proprioceptive input calming.
