Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am an occupational therapist in a diverse, lower-income school district in Washington state. My students are in special education self-contained classrooms. My students are inquisitive, and unique; they are fun-loving and eager to learn. I work with students ranging from preschool through eighth grade.

The majority of the students I serve are from lower-income households and have limited access to needed sensory materials; they are not defined by their conditions which include: autism, down syndrome, cerebral palsy, as well as "general education" learning challenges: your donation will help address critical sensory needs: oral motor, sensory aversion, sensory seeking, vestibular feedback and heavy work activities.

These interventions will help my students focus, return calm to their day and be ready and more focused for learning. Your donation will reach many students in need. Over half of my students receive free or reduced-price lunches, and more than 50% are members of traditionally disadvantaged racial and ethnic groups. Your project will make a meaningful impact for my students by giving them access to technology they don't have during sessions!

My Project

My special needs and general education students need access to these sensory seeking and “heavy work” tools that they currently lack for them to use.

These tools will help my students meet their sensory needs and recenter to return to class focused and able to follow through with daily activities and learning in class; utility wagon and cart will provide me the ability to give my students access to heavy work: pushing or pulling the cart and wagon provides input to their proprioceptive sensory system; the wiggle seat will help them get vestibular feedback during class.

I will use Velcro to attach a strip underneath the desk to provide sensory seekers with discrete tactile input during class. This has helped countless students; however, I need more of the material as I have run out.

The Newton's Cradles will offer my students opportunities to focus or jump and let excess energy out to get that needed vestibular feedback. This too will help them return to class focused or provide them with incentives of something to work towards, earning "sensory time" when they participate in class as our teachers need.

All these tools can be part of my students' “sensory diet“ in order to help prepare them to attend and be more fully present in class. Your generous donation will help my general education AND special needs students meet their sensory needs! I appreciate your generosity and for making these interventions possible!
