How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed? A review of student grades and school-wide data indicate that students with disabilities are the lowest performing sub-group at our school.
The students in my classroom are students with learning and emotional disabilities.
Many of them have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. Our classes serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities.
The typical student in my class reads at a second grade level and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense. The majority of our students are Native American. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population. Special education teachers are expected to deliver excellent instruction often without the requisite tools to teach our students.
My Project
We have iPads, however we want to extend our learning opportunities using technology. By getting the OSMO iPad learning accessories, the students will be able to explore coding, art, math, science, and reading.
These special education students need to be able to access the same learning opportunities that regular education students do.
When students are given novel items to learn with, their learning increases tremendously! Special education students learn best by doing...so this is a great way for them to learn! By providing these iPad accessories, these special education students will be so excited to extend their learning using hands-on and technology.
