The 19 kindergartners in my classroom are a spirited, fun-loving group. They absolutely adore technology and are experts on using tech both large and small! They adore using iPads to individualize their own literacy learning and get huge thrills from using our classroom Promethean board to share their learning in all content areas with the class. These precocious kindergartners are so interested in technology, in fact, that we even have a whole bookshelf dedicated to technology themed books!
This brilliant group of little people are from diverse backgrounds.
Some have non-traditional family structures, some hear a language other than English at home, and some have unique medical needs. They all, however, are united in their love of technology and their love of sharing this technology with their friends.
My Project
In a world where kids can get glued to technology and lose the collaborative, hands-on aspects of their learning, Osmo shines. Because an Osmo base shines the iPad's camera down on what students are doing with their hands, the games it facilitates are, by very definition, hands-on. And because of this tactile component, where shapes and numbers are manipulated by hand, students are much more capable of sharing their thinking and working together to solve a mathematical puzzle--as math should be!
My students deserve to be challenged in math--at the level that is "just right" for each of them.
Because Osmo tracks progress under different students' profiles, it can make sure that each student is getting just what they need--whether that means identifying numbers of dots on sight, adding single digits fluently, or more complicated sums. It also knows how much support each student needs when solving geometry challenges and what they can do all on their own.
I can't wait to see the impact of Osmo on our math centers--making them more engaging and tailored to each students' needs. I know these young technophiles will just adore meeting each math challenge and seeing themselves as the accomplished mathematicians they are!
