Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students with severe language and learning disabilities learn in a different way than their general education peers. Most of the students have social and emotional disorders that affect the way they interact with others. My students like to be engaged in learning using resources that are not available to them. They love to use more than one sense in discovering the world around them.
As members of a low-income community, my students have a challenge accessing different modes of discovery.
Content needs to be both visual and interactive for them to be interested and engaged. Many have communication disorders that prohibit them from responding to using traditional methods. It has been my mission as their teacher to make the world more accessible to them.
My Project
In special education, technology has become an important tool to help students with their needs in many ways. Content that was once very difficult to present to the students through texts and pictures on paper comes alive with the use of an iPad. Technology enables students to be engaged in the content and respond to it in their own ways. As teachers for exceptional learners, we strive to provide literacy and math-rich technology experiences where students can use their technology knowledge to enhance the skills necessary for a solid educational foundation.
The Osmo will allow students a true hands-on technology experience, as these games are interactive and come with manipulatives that bridge the real world to a virtual space.
Students will be able to engage with the Osmos on their own, with a teacher, or with peers. Also, they will be introduced to problem-solving and creativity skills in STEM. This will allow for students to not only learn from this experience, but also share their learning with each other!
