"Nothing is impossible; even the word itself says "I'm Possible!" This is a quote that hangs in our classroom and over the years has become our motto. My students know that I will never give up on them, so they aren't allowed to give up on themselves.
Students in my classroom are students who have not been successful in the traditional classroom setting.
They learn best with hands-on skills and real-world relevance. Students come to class ready to be immersed in learning for their life after high school, not just for a grade. My students haven't always "gotten" school.
Somewhere along the way, they lost their passion for learning. It is my goal to try to rejuvenate that joy and passion. My students work in a competency-based program where they are no longer focused on credits, but instead are showing true proficiency in sixty areas related to high school subjects such as biology, personal finance, and literature. Projects are all hands-on and often include "real world" relevance with field trips or guest speakers. Not all students learn the same and this program is designed for those students.
My Project
Our students were asked to find some new ways to use old models of Osmo our school had purchased a few years ago. The kits they were given were meant for Pre-k-1st grade students. Over the last three weeks, our students have become inspired by all the different levels and creations they can make with these technology tools.
Students who struggle in math and reading are now asking to work all day on these subjects because of the Osmo.
To help more students, we need more Osmo games and bases! These items will allow our students to learn coding that they can then take to new levels. They will be able to "play" more math games to help them catch up on the levels they are missing. They can even take some much needed break time and tap into their creative side.
Our students learn best in hands on ways. These tools will allow more of our students to be able to access the great tools that Osmo is!
