I have very curious students and work with the entire student body in our k-6 school! Our students have energetic, young minds continually in need of dynamic opportunities to be creators and inventors, instead of staring at a screen. Any time you can get a student excited about learning new skills, it's a win.
We have a rich and diverse student population.
In addition, more than 50% of our students come from economically disadvantaged households. Our students often don't have the opportunities and resources available to higher income families. It is also my hope that the teachers I work with can borrow these items and develop opportunities for teachers to feel comfortable having children use them in their classrooms.
I'm hoping to continue to captivate students with library activities and involve teachers to create new progressive lessons. I've increased the number of Makerspace items and technology available to students and staff, but budgets only go so far. I want my students to gain valuable 21st Century skills by "playing" and collaborating in the library.
My Project
I envision my students using the Osmo system during their library and classroom center times. We have a few Osmo's, but there are not enough for my larger class sizes. The Osmo attaches to an IPad and students then manipulate game pieces on the table which then show on the ipad. Multiple students can use the device at one time, but for more involvement smaller groups are needed to help manage behaviors.
Students will become better critical thinkers and will be able to interact with their peers in a way that fosters shared learning. These devices will give students the opportunity to learn how to draw which improves their small motor skills.
They will also learn phonics through the word games. While using the Tangram game, students will be enhancing their spacial reasoning skills. The Newton program provided from using Osmo introduces student to physics. The pizza creation game offers customer service, pizza creation, and making change for payments. There are coding games to teach students a future skills as well as math skills.
These games engage my learners from kindergarten through my 6th graders!
