Living in a rural town, many of the students of the school live in small communities of houses, or rent apartments. The school has a mix ethnically. Many families have moved up here after living in New York City and establishing themselves in the United States.
These students have big hearts and open minds.
I hope to use the art room as a tool to further students' interests.
Many students do receive assistance for school lunches, and many families rely on the school for assistance throughout the school year. Additionally, there is a large population of English Language Learners at the school.
My Project
Students need a space they can take ownership over. Students should know classroom routines and where things can be found. I have been working to make my art room more accessible to students with clearly labeled bins, class boxes and sections of the art room.
I hope to create a space where students know where to find things, and where to put finished work.
I am hoping to create a more organized diverse "What do I do when I'm done?" section, using a colorful cart with different activities inside. Additionally, I would like a drying rack that the students would be able to use without assistance. My current drying rack has fixed shelves and students struggle to fit pieces in-between levels. A drying rack with folding levels will help students place their artwork to dry.
