I teach 5th grade in a rural district in northern Michigan, at the same small, tight knit school I attended. It was at this very school that a handful of my amazing teachers inspired me to become a teacher. My passion as an educator is to provide my students with engaging, rigorous learning activities. I currently teach Math to all 83 of our fifth graders and every day our goal every day is to stretch our thinking, become problem solvers, use evidence and reasoning, apply background knowledge, and use appropriate tools to guide our learning. I have witnessed first hand, and research supports the idea, that instilling the skills mathematicians need in today’s ever changing world, requires hands on, engaging learning with maneuvering of concepts and numbers. These kids our are future and they deserve to be excited about their education!
My Project
With the Classroom Storage Baskets, students will be able to individually organize all of their own math manipulatives in the classroom. Organization will give them easy access to things they need for learning. As a teacher, I am constantly looking for ways to get students access to hands on learning and manipulatives, like the Learning Resources Gallon Measurement Set and the Learning Resources Liter Measurement Set, to help them understand mathematical concepts. If these manipulatives can stay at their desk, they will be able to use them whenever needed. With twenty eight to thirty students in a small room, it is much easier to provide students with everything they need within their own reach making less traffic and disruption.
