Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is not a class students want to be in. They are struggling with math and the last thing they want is to be taking an extra math class. It is hard to help these students be successful when they don't have the basic supplies they need or organizations skills to keep it together.
Our school reaches a population of students that come from very humble homes.
We serve many minority students and students who do not have English as their first language. Many students are from broken homes and are latch key kids. Many are required to take care of younger siblings at home because the parents are working or just aren't around for one reason or another. We have students who are homeless and students who are being recruited by gangs. We also have students who love to learn but who have just fallen through the cracks, those are the ones we are fighting to reach.
My Project
A lot of my students are unable to bring basic materials with them to class. Many can't afford them. Some have parents who work crazy hours or multiple jobs and just don't have the time or energy to get to the store, especially since it is the middle of the semester and school supply shopping has already been a stress this school year. The binders, divider, and file boxes will help my students be able to keep all of their work and resources in one place as well as create those resources. Which will not only help them in math but also help them realize they are capable of being organized when given the right tools. The pencils and colored pencils will provide the with the supplies the need to complete their work.
These kids need help in math.
They are struggling but not so far gone that they just don't care. If we can create a resource binder that they can turn to when they are frustrated with a problem and see something similar it will do a world of good for their hearts. It will be a testament to themselves that they can do the work because they have done it before.
