My students need this mobile leveled library unit to keep our intervention supplies organized. The desktop pocket chart will keep our learning close for easy interaction.
Keeping intervention materials organized will maximize the time I can spend on instruction with my intervention groups. I meet with 8 groups within my day and organizing is a must. This mobile library unit is just what we need to minimize wasted time spent on finding the needed materials for groups.
As an academic intervention specialist, I have the honor and pleasure to work with small groups of children who are at the highest risk in our urban school.
My students range from Kindergarten - 3rd Grade. They come to me for 40 minutes of focused intentional learning at their individualized level. My students are smart and capable children who come to us with a deficit in language due to circumstances beyond their control. Our school is located in an urban district with 99% of our children qualifying for free and reduced-price lunches. We have a diverse community of children with a high population of English Language Learners. Our children come from great challenges but show a resilience for learning. As with many districts ours is suffering from budget cuts that limit our resources. Quality education is the key for our children to conquer generational poverty.
My Project
My students are eager to be readers! They come with individual needs. The students that I serve are working far below grade-level in Kindergarten - 3rd Grade. They come to me to work in small groups on the deficits that are preventing them from being independent readers.
We are very fortunate to have a highly effective researched program to move students to benchmark. However, we lack the funds to purchase storage for our materials. Maintaining organization will maximize time spent on learning. Having eight, 40 minute groups, throughout my day can make organization a challenge. With the mobile library unit I will be able to organize materials by level making it more efficient to gather needed materials for each intervention group.
In addition, the table-top pocket chart will keep the learning close at hand. A portion of our time is spent on word work and having this pocket chart will allow children to do the manipulating of letters and word parts to build their competency.
Your donations will increase the minutes I can spend with my students, as well as, make this time more meaningful through the addition of the table-top pocket chart.
This will provide students with the best possible chance to become readers. Becoming a reader leads to life-long reading and learning. Life-long reading and learning equates to a greater chance of success in life. We need to break the cycle of poverty in our community and creating readers is a step in the right direction.
