My urban classroom consists of 26 unique fifth-grade students, who come from a variety of cultures. Each student comes with a set of unique experiences, socioeconomic backgrounds, opinions, and personality traits. Many students receive free or reduced lunch. Our school community has an increasing first generation ELL/ESL population, as well as a large population of children of immigrants. Our neighborhood is rich with families from many different countries. As a school, we celebrate this diversity with events throughout the school year.
Creating a balanced learning environment that meets the learning needs for all the diverse learning profiles in our room is always my goal.
Spaces for projects that are group orientated or independently driven. Having a variety of options and flexibility on how they can be used is key. Then filling the space with engaging and differentiated learning opportunities. Each student is unique and they will be drawn towards ‘preferred’ activities, things they think will be fun.
My Project
My class is constantly working on projects in all subjects. We have so many different supplies, in so many containers, my classroom looks like a storage closet. This can be too much for some students who need space to have a less cluttered feel. I have space outside of my classroom that I could put the larger lockable storage unit for supplies we use less frequently, and a place in my classroom for the others for supplies we use more frequently. The visual landscape of a room does effect productivity. We need the materials to complete our products, we just don't need to see them all the time.
